Accused cop killer Markeith Loyd to use insanity defense in Lt. Clayton murder trial, documents show

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County court documents show accused cop killer Markeith Loyd will use an insanity defense when he goes to court for the murder of an Orlando police officer.

Loyd will be in court Tuesday to have his motion decided on by an Orange County judge.

Loyd is accused of shooting and killing Orlando police Lt. Debra Clayton in the parking lot of a Walmart in 2017.

In October, a jury found Loyd guilty on all counts for the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon, and her unborn child, after deliberating for less than six hours.

A judge decided last month that the evidence pertaining to the Dixon murder trial is too prejudicial and will not be allowed during the guilt phase in the murder case of Clayton.

WFTV will be in the courtroom Tuesday and will monitor any new updates.
