Bear in mind: UCF police offer safety tips after bear spotted on campus

ORLANDO, Fla. — University of Central Florida police officers are asking anyone on the college’s main campus to keep an eye out for a bear recently spotted strolling around the school.

Officers said the spotting near the campus’ Challenge Course isn’t unusual, but that people on campus need to be aware of what to do in case they encounter it.

“If you encounter the bear, back slowly into a safe, indoor place. If approached, remain standing upright, back up slowly, and speak to the bear in a calm, assertive voice,” the department said in a tweet.

Officers encourage anyone who encounters the bear to make their presence known, but do not make any sudden movements. They encourage people who encounter the bear to move toward a safe, indoor space.
