Hurricane Nicole: 5 deaths reported in Central Florida

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Five people died in Central Florida during Hurricane Nicole.

Officials said four deaths happened in Orange County and one in Brevard County.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said the first two deaths in Orange County happened during a traffic crash on the Florida Turnpike during the storm.

The other two people in Orange County — a man and a woman — died after they were electrocuted by a downed power line in the Conway area, near Bayfront Parkway and Pershing Avenue.

Deputies said the man was killed after he lost control of his vehicle and made contact with the downed power line. Officials said the woman was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where she died.

In Brevard County, 68-year-old Thomas Whittle, of Port Canaveral, died early Thursday morning after he was rescued from a yacht while Hurricane Nicole was bearing down on Brevard County.
