Brevard County deputy killed by wrong-way driver on I-95

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The Brevard County community is mourning the loss of a sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty Saturday night after investigators say a wrong-way driver crashed head-on into his vehicle on Interstate 95.

Kevin Morris, a homicide agent with the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office, was heading to the scene of a deputy-involved shooting in Mims when the crash happened.

Both Morris and the other driver, a 26-year-old woman, were killed.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the woman had been driving back to Kissimmee from a wedding when she entered I-95 going the wrong way and collided head-on with Morris’ vehicle.

Both cars caught fire following the crash.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey became emotional while remembering Morris and the impact he had on those around him.

“If you knew Kevin, you loved him,” Ivey said. “He was a strong man of faith.

He had some old man-isms, if you will, and was just one of those guys that when he walked into a room, everybody lighted up, everybody was glad to be around him.”

Ivey also expressed his heartbreak over the loss.

“My heart’s broken,” the sheriff said.

Morris joined the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office in February 2021.

Before that, he served with the Palm Bay Police Department.

The Florida Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash.

The Sheriff’s Office says funeral arrangements for Morris will be announced once they are finalized.

A close friend of Morris also said that his impact on the community extended far beyond his work in law enforcement.
