Melbourne man seriously injured by unmarked patrol car in Orlando

The unmarked Toyota Camry was responding to a call with its emergency lights and sirens activated

ORLANDO, Fla. — A 60-year-old man from Melbourne was seriously injured on Friday, Oct. 23, when his electric bicycle was struck by an unmarked patrol car in Orlando.

The crash happened around 3:59 p.m. near the intersection of Rio Grande Avenue South and Grand Street.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the deputy was driving an unmarked Toyota Camry patrol car and responding to a call with emergency lights and sirens activated when the crash occurred. The injured cyclist was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Troopers say the electric bicycle and patrol car were both traveling north on Rio Grande Avenue, just south of Grand Street. The cyclist was ahead of the patrol car in the outside bicycle lane.

As the deputy entered the left-turn lane with emergency equipment activated, the bicyclist suddenly turned left from the bike lane into the turn lane. This placed the cyclist directly in the patrol car’s path, and the vehicle’s front struck the bicycle.

The deputy driving the patrol car was not injured in the collision and remained at the scene.

The Florida Highway Patrol stated that the crash remains under investigation.
