SunRail shares railroad safety message as part of National Rail Safety Week

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Florida Department of Transportation said there have been 10 crashes involving SunRail trains in Central Florida so far this year.

All could have been prevented, which is why the agency is pushing out its safety message.

It is part of a nationwide initiative that highlights the need for drivers to be safe in and around railroad tracks.

Channel 9 has covered many collisions involving trains and vehicles or pedestrians in Central Florida, as well as several close calls.

FDOT is sharing videos on social media showing crashes and near misses involving trains as part of National Rail Safety Week, which kicked off Monday.

Law enforcement will also be cracking down on drivers this week who disobey railroad warnings.

A total of 52 people were killed by trains in Florida last year, according to the Federal Railroad Administration.

That’s up from 32 the year before.

Sunrail said if you happen to stop on the tracks and a train is approaching, drive through the crossing arms, which are designed to break away, so you can get out of harm’s way.
