Orlando residents fight development planned on old bomb range near school

ORLANDO, Fla. — Thousands of new homes may soon be built near Lake Nona on land that was once used to test bombs.

The plot of land on Lee Vista Road sits behind Odyssey Middle School and has warning signs posted on it.

Old bombs had been recovered there nearly a decade ago, and even the school district refused to build there.

Some residents said they’re worried for their safety now that 4,000 homes are set to be built on that land.

"I knew there was bomb range out here somewhere, but I never thought my elected officials would allow for a development on a former bomb range, “resident Lisa Ayers said.

Officials said they have the most qualified team in the country to ensure the site is clear.

The city approved the project, saying Orlando's population is expected to jump by 24 percent over the next 15-years.
