Osceola County aims for higher census response rate after being lowest in Central Florida

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Filling out the census is quick work, but Osceola County Commissioner Vivianna Janer worries the time commitment isn’t the only reason her county’s response rate is the lowest in Central Florida.

“They have on their mind other very important things like, ‘How am I going to pay my rent? How am I going to keep food … on the table?’ And so something like filling out the census is really on the backburner,” she said.

As deadline approaches, Central Florida residents urged to complete census surveys

Osceola County is working to remind people the importance of filling out their census.

In what could be the final stretch, there are signs in English and Spanish all over the county, continued attempts for a final-hour bump in the self-response rate.

The regional bureau is also stepping up door-knocking to catch those who haven’t gone online or filled out the form that came in the mail.

Florida’s Census failures could cost state a congressional seat and billions of dollars

A judge recently ordered the census bureau to keep counting through Oct. 31 to make the count as accurate as possible.
