Dashcam, aerial footage released in high-speed chase on Florida Turnpike

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — Dash camera footage shows the dramatic high-speed chase along the Florida Turnpike Wednesday involving a stolen vehicle, which led county and state investigators on a chase from the Treasure Coast to Osceola County.

Dakota C. Middleton, 24, of Fort Pierce is charged with grand theft auto and aggravated assault on an officer, according to a Florida Highway Patrol arrest report.

Just after 2 p.m., Wednesday the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office responded to a stolen vehicle traveling on the Florida Turnpike. Air Patrol said it was following a 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche that was confirmed stolen.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle around 2:15 p.m. Just after 3 p.m., Middleton allegedly struck a patrol car, the arrest report states.

During the pursuit, Middleton allegedly used the shoulder to pass multiple vehicles, went northbound in the southbound lanes and reached speeds up to 98 mph, according to the arrest report.

Deputies around 3:20 p.m. used a stop stick to disable the suspect’s left front tire. After they performed a PIT maneuver, the suspect’s vehicle overturned and came to a final rest on the right shoulder. Middleton was taken into custody after being transported to the hospital for his injuries.

Middleton was on the run in the stolen truck from St. Lucie County, according to authorities. He was treated at a nearby hospital and then booked into Osceola County Jail.
