‘No one is above the law’: Prominent Central Florida defense attorney arrested

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A prominent Central Florida defense attorney was arrested early Monday.

Attorney Hal Uhrig was picked up at the Osceola County courthouse and taken in for questioning.

“No one is above the law,” Osceola County Sheriff Marco Lopez said in a news conference following Uhrig’s arrest.

Uhrig was set to appear in a separate hearing Monday morning at the Osceola County courthouse but did not make it.

Deputies said Uhrig was arrested on a solicitation to commit forgery charge, and has also been charged with tampering with a witness.

Lopez said the charges stem from an incident in July involving an accused rapist. Lopez said Uhrig was representing a man accused of raping a 9-year-old girl.

Lopez said in a meeting between Uhrig, the accused rapist, the victim and the victim’s father, Uhrig urged the girl to write a letter stating the rape never happened and to lie and say it never happened during her deposition.

Lopez said the girl, now a teenager, came forward and investigators began looking into the case.

“In my experience from being in law enforcement, this probably wasn’t his first rodeo,” Lopez said.
