Oviedo has plans to remove stench from neighborhood

OVIEDO, Fla. — Some Oviedo residents say they are sick of the city's smelly wastewater treatment plant and are demanding that city leaders fix the problem.

The plant is east of State Road 434 in the Alafaya Woods community.

"It's just like a smell that's like, boom, hits you in the face," said resident Franco Del Pino.

A fence is the only thing between Del Pino's house and Oviedo's wastewater treatment plant.

Some residents near the plant said it smells like rotten eggs, and that they can't stand the odor.

More than 20 houses butt against the property.

Because so many people have complained the city is spending more than $560,000 to freshen things up.

The money will pay for a bio-filtration system, which will convert the potent hydrogen sulfide into odorless carbon dioxide and salt.

Some city taxpayers who do not live next to the treatment plant question why people moved next door in the first place and say they should not have to foot the bill.

Resident Bowie White said he didn't think the project was worth the money.

City officials said the system is worth the money because it could cut down on the smell by 98 percent.

Del Pino said he hopes they're right.

"Pretty much everyone in this neighborhood would like that," said Del Pino.

The new system is scheduled to be installed next May.

In 2010 the voters approved a referendum to purchase the plant by the City and with that approval by the voters came improvements, including the odor control.  Still some resident say it's not worth the money.
