BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — A parent claims she tried to warn school leaders about a Brevard County teacher who is facing charges for having sex with a student.
Former school teacher Irene Khan's troubles started long before she was arrested and brought to the Brevard County jail, WFTV learned.
Parents of students said they complained about her behavior in the eighth-grade class at Imagine Elementary School where she taught.
The mother of one student who was in Khan's class spoke with WFTV, but she did not want to be identified.
"She lifted her shirt to show off her tattoos," the parent said.
Imagine Schools, which run charter schools across the country, would only tell WFTV that Khan stopped teaching at the West Melbourne school in January, but wouldn't say whether she quit or was fired.
Company executives declined to provide the teacher's personnel records or acknowledge whether the school received complaints from parents about Khan.
The parent WFTV spoke with said her son suspected something was going on between the teacher and the 14-year-old she's accused of having sex with, and that it could have been stopped months earlier.
"I think if they would have interviewed each child, they would have known what was going on at that time," the parent said.
WFTV learned that Khan has been released from jail on her own recognizance, and she is forbidden from contact with any children other than her own.
Now that Khan is free again she will have to find a new place to live --an eviction notice was posted on her apartment door.
WFTV checked the State Department of Education's grade for Imagine Elementary School.
It received an "F" grade from the state this school year.
