Pet parrot alerts family of house fire

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A south Florida parrot is being credited with saving its family from a house fire.

The Niesel family said the bird, named Pearly, noticed the fire early Tuesday morning in their Ft. Lauderdale home.

Pearly woke them up by squawking very loudly and making other noises in its cage, the family said.

The family said Pearly went off before the smoke detector.

Firefighters arrived and were able to put out the flames.

They were able to contain the fire in the laundry room.
