PONCE INLET, Fla. — A Volusia County obstetrician was arrested for abusing his teenage daughter while he was on call for a hospital, police said.
Ponce Inlet police said Dr. Ricardo Larrain was arrested on July 4 for beating his 17-year-old daughter.
Police said Larrain was intoxicated when they responded to the call and that Larrain said he was on call to deliver babies.
"They smelled (alcohol) on his breath. His eyes were glassy," Ponce Inlet Police Chief Frank Fabrizio said.
Larrain is listed as an obstetrician and gynecologist at the Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Ormond Beach and also works at Florida Hospital in DeLand.
Hospital officials said Larrain was not on call when he was arrested.
"He just said he was on call and he ... asked us if he could make a phone call to get someone to cover for him, which we allowed him when we had him here at the holding cell," Fabrizio said.
Police showed up at Larrain's home on July 4, and his daughter said he was drunk and irate because she drove his car.
Larrain's daughter said he smashed her iPad and iPhone, shoved her and pulled her hair out when she tried to stop him. She told police that it had happened before.
"According to her, it's not the first time. She says when he drinks he becomes very upset, and this has happened in the past," Fabrizio said.
Police said Larrain refused a Breathalyzer test.
Larrain has been a doctor since 1992 and his license is clear and active with no public complaints, according to the Florida Health Department.
