COCOA, Fla. — A man walked into the provost’s office on the Cocoa campus of Brevard Community College on Monday and used a stun gun to attack a school employee, police said.
The victim, whom police are not identifying, is the secretary of the provost who runs BCC’s Cocoa campus. According to BCC’s website, the provost of the Cocoa campus is Beverly J. Slaughter.
Cocoa police said a hooded man walked into the office on the second floor of the library on Monday afternoon and repeatedly shocked the 62-year-old woman, and she was knocked to the ground and continuously zapped with a stun gun. She screamed for help, and the alleged attacker took off only when others arrived.
The office is in an isolated part of the building. The provost was not there, but her assistant was working.
Police said it appears the attacker was specifically targeting those in charge of the Cocoa campus.
“This is a person who went in and attacked basically a defenseless woman. Why he did we are not sure, and we are hoping to find him very quickly," Barbara Matthews of the Cocoa Police Department told WFTV reporter Kevin Oliver.
College officials gave police a list of potential suspects who have recently expressed anger with the college and who might have targeted the provost. The victim said the man was wearing a hoodie pulled tight around his head and was wearing sunglasses and gloves.
Students continued to work and study inside the library and seemed to be unaware of the attack.
The victim is expected to be OK.
