ORLANDO, Fla. — University of Central Florida police said they had a bizarre run-in with a man who they said has caused problems on campus before.
The 45-year-old suspect has been arrested and banned from campus.
Steven Marshall was released from prison about two weeks ago for a theft at a hotel, but he had been picked up by campus police in 2011 for breaking into vending machines with a crow bar and tire iron.
Police said they found him walking around the engineering building on campus Monday with a crow bar in his pants.
Marshall spent time in prison for damaging coin machines and other theft-related charges.
In 2014, Marshall was arrested for trespassing on the UCF campus.
“I can’t imagine how much money would be in vending machines when people use cards mostly nowadays,” said student Kevin Josylyn. “So it doesn’t seem worth it.”
Inside the campus police station, police said Marshall kicked and broke the glass door of the holding cell and had to be moved to the cell next door.
Police said he was extremely combative and threatened to spit on officers and remove his restraints.
They said he removed his restraints in the back of the patrol car on the way to jail, and threatened to kick out the windows of the car.
Police said Marshall tried to give a fake name, but the officer recognized him from a bulletin at the police station.
Marshall is being held in the Orange County Jail.
