Police: Winter Garden home evacuated amid investigation of possible sinkhole

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — Members of a west Orange County family evacuated their home Sunday morning while officials investigate what’s causing the house’s walls to crack and its tile flooring to buckle, the Winter Garden Police Department said.

A building inspector and firefighters went to the home in the StoneCreek subdivision near Stoneybrook West Parkway and Avalon Road after the homeowner said he noticed popped up tiles and cracked floors in his home, Winter Garden police Lt. Scott Allen said.

The inspector posted a notice on the home’s garage door, declaring that it wasn’t safe to live in until a structural report can be completed. The next step is for an engineer to come out to collect soil samples.

Sheila Rivera, who rents an adjacent home, said firefighters also found cracks in her house.

“We don’t know what it is for sure. We have to get the insurance agency out here to evaluate everything,” Rivera said. “We hope it’s just the foundation settling and not anything serious.”

City officials said they don’t yet know if a sinkhole is causing the damage. They said it could also be caused by a depression, a settling foundation, a rotted tree root or even a broken pipe.

No other homes were evacuated. %
