Sheriff: 2-year-old girl shot by 3-year-old who found gun in sofa

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — A 2-year-old girl is in a Central Florida hospital fighting for her life after investigators said she was accidentally shot by a 3-year-old boy.

Polk County deputies said two men have been arrested in connection with the shooting.

One of those men was also injured in a crash while trying to rush the baby to the hospital.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd went over the horrific timeline of events on Saturday that led up to the shooting and crash Friday night.

Judd said the young victim was shot one time in her upper left chest and is currently in critical, but stable condition.

Investigators said Kevonte Wilson, Rodderick Haynes and Chad Berrien were watching a basketball game shortly before midnight Friday when the 3-year-old child found a gun belonging to Wilson in the sofa.

The child then pointed it at the 2-year-old girl and shot her with it.

While the three were rushing to the hospital, they crashed into another car at Olive Street and Oregon Avenue in Lakeland.

A good Samaritan stopped and took Berrien and the victim to a nearby hospital.

He has been arrested for failure to safely store a firearm, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, the sheriff said.

Deputies said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
