Woman bitten by shark on Melbourne Beach

MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. — A woman was bitten by a shark on Melbourne Beach, according to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

It happened between Ocean Avenue and Atlantic Street at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday while the woman was boogie boarding in shallow water.

A witness said he heard the woman screaming from the ocean, and when she made it to shore, her arm was covered in blood.

She was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in stable condition.

Officials have not identified the victim or the extent of her injuries.

The victim said she was hit by the fin of what she believes was a 3-foot shark before being bitten on her right hand and wrist, a Melbourne Beach police spokesman said.
