ORLANDO, Fla. — A pregnant manatee that was rescued off the Massachusetts coast was on its way to SeaWorld in Orlando Tuesday for rehabilitation before an eventual release back into its native waters.
The manatee, named Washburn, was rescued by workers with the International Fund for Animal Welfare on Sept. 22, the U.S. Coast Guard said.

The Coast Guard has teamed with several animal rescue teams to get Washburn back to Florida.
Washburn was taken to Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, where she remained until it was safe to relocate her.
She was scheduled to leave from the Groton-New London Airport in Connecticut and arrive at Orlando International Airport at about 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Once on the ground, Washburn will be taken to SeaWorld, where she will be cared for until she is ready to be released back into the wild, officials said.
We’ve got some exciting news to share! Yesterday our veterinary team was able to determine during an ultrasound test that the rescued manatee is pregnant. Our veterinary team will continue to monitor and assess her health in preparation for transport to Florida for a longer term rehabilitation before ultimate release into warmer Florida waters. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for more updates.
