Proposed sewage plant near Deltona homes has residents concerned

DELTONA, Fla. — Plans for a sewage plant in Deltona have some nearby homeowners upset, Channel 9 found out.

The subdivision developer wants to build more houses, but said a new sewage plant is necessary to support the proposed homes.

The plan calls for a package sewer treatment plant to be built at least 50 feet from homes near Barger Drive.

"This is definitely not a part of living the American dream," homeowner Ashtyn Jones said.

Jones said she had no idea a sewage plant could be going up very close to her new home.

"Am I going to have to be worried about my drinking water or my child's health?" Jones asked.

The developer's plans have been submitted to Deltona city officials. The small sewage plant would be a cheaper option rather than connecting the new homes to the city's plant that's miles away, the developer said.

But the cost of the proposal doesn't matter to the homeowners who could be living near the plant.

"How would you feel if it was your backyard?" Jones asked.

The developer told Eyewitness News that the plans are still very premature. The city has yet to vote on the proposal.

"I'm not going to go down without a fight," Jones said.

Several residents said they plan to go to city hall on April 15 to voice their concerns about the project.
