Relatives say body found in Daytona Beach that of missing 85-year-old man

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — A body found Sunday in Daytona Beach is that of a missing 85-year-old man who disappeared earlier this month from an assisted living facility, his relatives said Monday.

The Daytona Beach Police Department said a decomposing body was found near a home on Fairmont Road, blocks away from the Indigo Palms assisted living facility where Harold Cantrell disappeared from on July 5.

The body was found behind the home of Calvin Davis Jr., who said he had noticed a foul stench in his backyard for a while but didn't know what it was.

He said his neighbor and daughter went back to investigate and found the body caught up in the wire fence in his backyard.

"That is the first time I've ever seen somebody like that," Davis said. "It's a shame you got to go out like that."

Police are working with the medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death and the man’s identity.

The death remains under investigation.
