Residents want Orange County, Orlando to fix neighborhood flooding problem

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Monday's steady rain made what has become a common problem even worse for some residents near Universal Studios.

Homeowners on Vineland Road told Channel 9's Ryan Hughes that streets fill with water when it rains and that water drains into their homes.

Residents told Hughes they have complained to the county and the city but nothing is being done to help them.

The street is city of Orlando property, but the homes suffering from the rainwater intrusion are in Orange County.

"It's frustrating.  Luckily most of the time I'm home when it happens, but if I'm not home this is what I come home to," said Sabrina Bunnell, pointing to water in her yard and her garage.

Monday afternoon's rain dumped around two inches of water in the area. Bunnell said she believes the drainage system can't keep up with the water.

"The drain couldn't support it. The drain is literally pushing water out of it instead of sucking water into it," said Bunnell.

Residents told Hughes that neither the city nor the county will take responsibility for the flooding problems that they have endured for a long time.

"It's just frustrating," said resident Patrick Vanderwyden who has lived in the neighborhood for around 30 years.

Homeowners are hoping that local leaders will take notice of their problem and do something to help them out.
