SANFORD, Fla. — No flight attendant pre-flight message can prepare you for this.
An Allegiant flight landed in South Carolina instead of completing its trip to Orlando-Sanford International Airport after oxygen masks dropped down mid-flight.
Channel 9 was in Sanford when the passengers finally landed and they were all relieved to be back on the ground.
Some passengers thought it was an accident when the oxygen masks dropped, but when their ears started popping and the plane descended quickly, they knew something was wrong.
Passengers who were on the scary flight greeted their loved ones with hugs and relief this afternoon.
Many said they feared they would never see their families again.
The Allegeiant airplane was headed toward the Orlando-Sanford airport when it lost pressure in the cockpit.
Alex Resntitnyk was sitting in the front of the plane.
“All of the sudden a lot of pressure started coming in the cabin,” Resntitnyk said. “My ears started popping more than usual, felt light headed, looked around and said, ‘This can’t be right’.”
“My heart started beating really fast,” Resntitnyk said. “I started thinking about my family.”
The pilot made an emergency landing in South Carolina. No one was injured.
Allegiant put all the passengers up in a hotel Sunday night and put them on another plane Monday morning.
The airline also refunded part of their ticket and gave passengers a $200 voucher.
Allegient still has not told Channel 9 what caused the pressure problem.
