Seminole County closes boat ramps as St. Johns River rises

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Days of downpours have forced Seminole County officials to close several boat ramps until waters recede.

Officials closed ramps at Mullet Lake Park, Lake Monroe and Lake Jesup. In some cases they said the boat docks are under water.

The county is offering sandbags to residents. (More on park, ramp closures and sandbags)

Record-setting rains in September have the St. Johns River ready to spill over its banks.

Residents in Astor, a Lake County town that sits on the St. Johns, have seen flooding.

Officials said water levels are expected to rise to a point they call a "minor flood stage."

One Astor resident said flooding isn't new to her.

"I think the last flood we had was about 6 years ago when it flooded our house," said Patricia Willet.

On Thursday, emergency management officials from Lake, Seminole and Volusia counties will head out on a boat with officials from the National Weather Service to assess the potential flood impacts.

More storms moved across central Florida Wednesday bringing 1-2 inches of rain in spots.

Channel 9 chief meteorologist Tom Terry said the scattered showers will last throughout the evening and then return Thursday and Friday.

Terry said a fast-moving cold front will pass through central Florida Saturday, bringing a change of rain. He said that several days of dry weather and cooler temperatures will follow the front.
