Seminole County to conduct virtual driver’s tests starting Monday

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — Many of us remember the day we took our drivers test, but COVID-19 put the brakes on that service at the tax collector offices in Central Florida.

In Seminole County, driver’s tests will resume Monday but they will be done virtually.

Normally, at the beginning of a driver’s test, an examiner gets into a vehicle with a driver and studies their every move, but in Seminole County, a cellphone will be with drivers as they drive through the course.

As drivers stop, turn left and park, the examiner will give commands through the driver’s cellphone while they watch the driver on an iPad.

“This allows us to keep the social distancing in place, but also enables us to provide these vital services to the public,” said Joel Greenberg, Seminole County tax collector.

Drivers will only hear the examiners give orders as they take the test, but the examiners are able to see and hear everything drivers do, inside and outside the vehicle.

“The iPad allows us to both monitor how the driver is performing. This is another example of technology and innovation in the government,” Greenberg said.

Innovation is something Greenberg is not afraid to try. His Winter Springs branch was the only one to remain open during the shutdown in the state, using the old banks drive-thru to serve customers.

The driving test will begin Monday and teenagers who are anxious to get their license will need to have someone in the care with them who is over 21 in order to take the test.
