Seminole County to limit first dose vaccine days

NOW PLAYING ABOVE

OVEIDO, Fla, — At the COVID-19 pod at the Oviedo Mall, a steady stream of those 65 and older are coming in to get either their first or second dose of the vaccine, but that is about to change.

Beginning next week, first-dose appointments will only be available three days per week.

Seminole County Emergency Manager Alan Harris said it’s all about supply.

“We just didn’t receive the amount of vaccines that we were hoping for,” Harris said.

Help may be on the way. On Tuesday, the Biden administration announced they plan to expand the vaccine supply to 10.5 million doses nationwide.

Also announced Tuesday was the first phase of the federal retail pharmacy program, which will give U.S. residents the ability to get the vaccine from 13 additional pharmacy retailers across the country.

County officials say the goal is for all vaccine sites to be efficient and administer as many vaccine doses as possible.

“We will be busy, and the pharmacies will be busy, and that is what we want. We want every one of us to be at peak efficiency,” Harris said.
