Seminole County School Board votes 4-1 to rezone elementary schools

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — The Seminole County School Board met Tuesday to discuss and vote on a controversial plan to rezone six elementary schools and reopen Longwood Elementary at a cost of about $8 million.

The plan will move about 1,000 students from the existing schools to Longwood to help alleviate overcrowding.

Dozens of parents showed up to voice their opposition to the plan, saying moving students from one school to the other doesn’t fix the problem.

“The idea is you’re supposed to fix schools, not prop them up by shifting around your students,” one parent said. “That’s all I’ve got to say.”

District leaders argued that paying $8 million to renovate Longwood Elementary would cost about half what building a new school would.

Longwood is expected to reopen in August.
