SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — The Seminole County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an ongoing scam in which criminals impersonate law enforcement officers and demand payment through Bitcoin, gift cards or bank transfers.
Deputies said scammers are contacting people by phone and email, falsely claiming the victim has an outstanding warrant or missed jury duty and must immediately pay a fine.
The sheriff’s office emphasized that legitimate law enforcement agencies do not collect fines through Bitcoin, gift cards or bank transfers and will not contact people in this manner.
Officials are urging residents who receive these messages to ignore them and avoid sending money or sharing personal information.
Anyone who believes they have been targeted by the scam is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
