Central Florida rabbit care group sees growing leap of abandoned bunnies

OVIEDO, Fla. — It’s less than 2 months from Easter, and a local rescue says they are being swamped with donated rabbits.

Channel 9 went to Orlando Rabbit Care and Adoptions in Oviedo to learn more.

They said that last year, they fostered and cared for about 500 rabbits. This year, they are on track to double that amount.

They think that’s because so many people adopted rabbits during the pandemic, like other pets, and are now trying to give them up.

They said anyone looking to get a rabbit need to make sure they are fully prepared to welcome the animal into their home.

Some people will get rabbits and then a couple of months later, they say it doesn’t fit into their lifestyle and it can be when a rabbit is sort of getting to teenage years.

They’ll look for somebody to take the rabbit off their hands, or they’ll put them outside.

The group also reports seeing a spike in donations and abandonments after Easter.
