Sheriff: Polk County deputy shot, suspect killed in Frostproof shooting

9 a.m. Update:

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — During a news conference, Sheriff Grady Judd announced that the man who was shot and killed by deputies Friday morning was Ramon Martinez, 37.

Judd said Martinez shot and injured 25-year-old Deputy Sheriff Samuel Yates.

Yates, who is a member of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team, suffered a shoulder wound and glass shrapnel injuries to his face but is expected to survive.

On social media, Judd said, “We are grateful that he will be okay.”

He added that the incident involving Martinez began in Highlands County and ended in Polk County.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said a suspect was killed in the Frostproof area earlier this morning.

Deputies said the shooting scene is at T.S. Wilson Road at South Scenic Hwy (US-17).
