Skydiver injured during landing in DeLand

DELAND, Fla. — A skydiver was seriously injured while he was trying to land in DeLand on Saturday, officials said.

It was the second time this month the skydiving facility, Skydive DeLand has had a major problem.

A few weeks ago, a man was killed when his parachute failed.

Skydiving comes with risks. The 83,000 people who jump from Skydive DeLand each year are warned of them, said Skydive DeLand general manager Mike Johnston.

"We engage in a sport that's high speed, involves altitude, so our potential for injuries and even fatal injuries exists all the time," said Johnston.

The man was jumping with a small group on Saturday when Johnston said he landed several blocks from where he should have. He landed in a school bus parking lot, hitting the side of a bus before landing.

"He sustained an abrupt opening, which is not such an uncommon occurrence. But for some reason, he received a severe injury from that," said Johnston.

Johnston said the has decades of experience and he's not sure why he got off course. Initially, he thought the man may have had a medical problem, but now says they'll have to wait for more information from the investigation to confirm that.

Earlier this month, an Altamonte Springs man died at the facility when his parachute did not open properly. That made it six deaths at the facility in the last eight years.
