Slain Brevard deputy's son pleads no contest to aggravated assault charge

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. — The son of a slain Brevard County deputy was in court Monday morning and pleaded no contest to an aggravated assault charge.

Ryan Pill is the son of Deputy Barbara Pill, who was shot and killed during a traffic stop in 2012. He is a former deputy and corrections officer who was fired after allegations came to light last year that he had sex with a 16-year-old girl at least twice.

Ryan Pill was initially charged with two counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, but following a plea deal, he was charged with aggravated assault and will have to serve five years of probation.

"She is going to turn 18 in February and at that time, if she wants to have contact with Mr. Pill, she can seek permission from the court," said the judge.

The conditions of the deal include no contact with the 16-year-old girl in the case or any minors unless supervised by a parent or guardian. The State Attorney's Office said the plea deal is a result of the teen being unwilling to pursue charges.

"I can't say she was ever was eager to prosecute, but we have to recognize this is a violation of the law," said prosecutor Julia Lynch.

Investigators said Ryan Pill had met the girl while he was a Brevard County deputy. As part of his agreement, Ryan Pill's law enforcement license was revoked.
