Speedway officials push to wrap up Daytona Rising construction on time

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — In two months, race fans should be able to get a sneak peek at the newly renovated Daytona International Speedway.

Channel 9's Blaine Tolison was at the speedway Friday, where the construction has picked up as officials work to get things wrapped up on time.

Inside a section of Daytona Rising, where 40,000 new seats will open by the 2015 Rolex 24-hour race, there is a race to complete the finishing touches.

Where there were steel workers there are now electricians installing fans for patron comfort.

"It's very important, especially for older women," said one race fan.

Other workers spent the day installing a bridge to the grandstands and new lighting.

Officials said the work will be completed on time, and fans have said they're already impressed by the extra space and the seats that go as high as 150 feet.

"It looks bigger from in there than it does out here," said race fan Syble Folds. "You know, in there, it's very overwhelming."

Officials said by January two out of five main entrances to the speedway will be open to the public, as well as new concessions and several escalators.
