Spring breakers behaving badly in Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Daytona Beach patrol officers were on the lookout Thursday for spring breakers behaving badly. The officers were primarily cracking down on the open container violators on the beaches.

Most people know that alcohol is not allowed on the beach because of signs posted before you enter the beach. Still, beach patrol officers run into their fair share people who test the rules.

College students from across the country packed the sands and some packed their coolers with alcohol.

All week long, officers such as Julie Anderson have been handing out warnings and $50 tickets to anyone with an open container. She caught one college student for the first time. He only received a warning.

"I think I lucked out because I don't want to pay a fine; so she was pretty cool about it," he said.

Most of the time that's how it goes, but there were others causing problems on the beach.

WFTV was there as beach patrol responded to a fight south of the Main Street pier.

When the officer in front of WFTV's vehicle eased onto A1A with the emergency lights on, a spooked motorcyclist slammed on the brakes and crashed.

He escaped with a few cuts and scrapes. Beach patrol officials are reviewing the accident. It goes to show you what can happen during Bike Week, the other major event going on right during spring break vacation.

So far, no one has been held at fault for that crash.

Beach patrol has handed out 47 open containers citations so far this year. That's compared to 147 at this time last year.
