SR 408 widening project begins soon in Orange County

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — For drivers wondering when traffic will be improved on State Road 408 in West Orange County, your dream is about to become true.

The Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) is set to begin the project on widening State Road 408 from Good Homes Road to Hiawassee on Monday, Nov. 7.

As of right now, more than 71,000 vehicles a day travel the stretch of SR 408, making it the second busiest section of SR 408, officials said.

"The traffic volume is expected to increase to more than 108,000 vehicles a day by 2035," said Kelda Senior, a spokesperson with the Central Florida Expressway Authority.

The two-mile, $23.57 million project will expand from the road two to three lanes, plus widen the ramp from westbound SR 408 to Good Homes Road from one lane to two lanes.

Additional improvements to the project include expanding the SR 408 Hiawassee Road Main Plaza to six lanes instead of four, upgraded signage, sound walls and new roadway lighting, which will help drivers who have a tough time seeing at night.

"This project is expected to greatly improve travel times and reduce congestion along this busy section of SR 408," said Senior.
