ST. CLOUD, Fla. — St. Cloud customers set a new electricity demand record as extreme heat continues across Central Florida, according to the Orlando Utilities Commission.
OUC said demand reached 303 megawatts Sunday, surpassing the previous record of 298 megawatts set July 8.
Temperatures have climbed into the upper 90s in recent days, with heat index values exceeding 110 degrees. The conditions are placing additional strain on air-conditioning systems and increasing electricity use, the utility said.
OUC recommends setting air conditioners to 78 degrees or higher and using the “auto” fan setting. The utility said every degree below 78 can increase cooling costs by 6% to 8%.
Customers can also reduce energy use by:
- Replacing dirty air-conditioning filters
- Using ceiling fans and turning them off when leaving a room
- Closing blinds, shades and curtains, especially on east- and west-facing windows
- Running full loads in dishwashers and washing machines
- Setting water heaters between 120 and 125 degrees
- Air-drying clothes when possible
OUC offers budget billing, prepaid service and flexible payment plans for customers who need help managing their bills.
