ORLANDO, Fla. — The Sky Trail attraction at the Artegon Mall on International Drive will be closed indefinitely after a customer fell to his death on Christmas Eve.
Seminole County resident Robert Belvoir, 52, fell 30 feet to his death on concrete floor while doing one of the ropes courses at the attraction.
He was with his daughter at the mall and they had planned to see a movie later.
The owners of Sky Trail met with state and local officials Friday as part of an investigation into the man's death.
"I saw him lying facedown," said witness Joyce Rothery. "I screamed and I ran over there. I saw the blood."
Police said Belvoir's safety harness broke while he was on the course, which is three stories high. Witnesses at the mall rushed to his aid and tried to save the 52-year-old.
"She started doing chest compressions, and then I knew she knew what she was doing," said Rothery.
The course remained closed Friday and will have to be inspected by state licensing authorities before it can reopen.
Some thrill-seekers who have tried the ropes course now said they won't be back.
"Seeing the harness and two ropes, you're connected to bars and cables. The thought of falling never crossed my mind; or dying, much less dying," said Kayla Seward.
In a statement, Belvoir’s family members said he was a great father and they are dismayed that a fun Christmas Eve outing turned into a tragedy.
Belvoir was a longtime resident of Orlando and went to Winter Park High School. He was a computer programmer and graduated from the University of Central Florida.
One of the owners of Sky Trail released a statement that read, “We express our deepest condolences to the family of Robert Belvoir. We are cooperating with all investigations of the incident that took place.”
