Surging diesel fuel prices mean higher costs for consumers, experts say

ORLANDO, Fla. — The cost of diesel fuel has hit an all-time high.

This time last year, a gallon of diesel was just over $3 per gallon. Now, the national average for a gallon of diesel is $5.29.

Experts say the rising cost will impact everyone, whether they use diesel fuel or not.

“It’s important for everyone to understand how vital trucking is to your daily life,” President and CEO of the Florida Trucking Association Alix Miller said. “An increase of diesel prices by almost $1, more than $1 per gallon directly impacts how much a product costs once it shows up at the store.”

Miller says the current situation is unsustainable for the supply chain.

“I think there needs to be a lot of things that change in order for people to continue to receive goods by trucks at a reasonable price,” Miller said.

To cover the high cost, truck companies have to increase their rates to haul goods or freight. Corporations and businesses then pass those costs on to the consumer, meaning higher prices on everyday items.

“This is going to be baked into the price of any sort of good,” Miller explained.

The high diesel prices could also affect energy costs. Coal is often transported to power plants by way of diesel trains.

Much of the equipment in the agriculture industry is also powered by diesel engines.

Congressional lawmakers are considering legislation that would allow the Federal Trade Commission to monitor prices and go after oil companies if needed.

Democrats say the legislation is a top priority.
