Suspect allegedly killed Cocoa grandfather at random

COCOA, Fla. — Investigators said a Cocoa grandfather was killed at random by a man who was upset about his girlfriend cheating on him.

Shawn Jones was arrested in an unrelated case in Miami. He's now being charged for the death of 62-year-old James Brundige, whose body was found off Fiske Boulevard in May.

Brundige's death hit the community hard, and initially no one knew why he was killed.

"I'm just sad about the whole thing," neighbor Bridget Anderson said.

Now detectives believe that Jones was upset with his girlfriend and on drugs when he threatened to kill the next person who came to the area on May 27. Brundige happened to be pulling into the apartment complex and was shot by Jones moments later, according to investigators.

"I can't imagine somebody shooting somebody just because of that. He shot him for no reason," family friend Alice Smith said.

Smith said that Brundige was a nice man and a retired grandfather.

Jones allegedly took a bus to Miami after the murder but was tracked down by federal authorities. He has been transferred to the Brevard County Jail and is facing a first-degree murder charge.
