Scene cleared after suspicious package prompts evacuations at OIA's DHL facility

ORLANDO, Fla. — A suspicious package that was found at a DHL facility at the Orlando International Airport forced evacuations Thursday.

The facility was evacuated while the OIA Fire Department and the Orlando Fire Department worked at the scene.

The package was discovered at 11:30 a.m., and the scene was cleared in the early afternoon.

The box popped open as it was making its way through the DHL system, officials said. Workers couldn’t figure out what was inside, so the Airport Authority called for hazmat teams.

Employees huddled around watching crews analyze the suspicious package.

Two hours later, crews said the mysterious box was safe and let workers back inside.

Alex Urbano, who works at a facility next to DHL, said he’s seen a lot but never an evacuation.

“We’re trained in hazardous material handling and response if anything does happen, if a package is leaking, (or there are) odd deformities in the package,” Urbano said. “They told us to evacuate and we need to immediately leave the facility.”

The evacuation didn’t affect flights or airport operations.
