SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — A 47-year-old Lakeland man was killed Thursday night when an SUV struck his motorized scooter on U.S. 301, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the scooter was stopped in the southbound lanes at the intersection of County Road 470 around 10:55 p.m.

An 18-year-old Port Charlotte man driving a Hyundai SUV southbound failed to stop and collided with the scooter, FHP said.

The scooter operator died at the scene. Troopers did not release either driver’s name or provide information about possible charges.
