OCALA, Fla. — Prosecutors said they will not pursue manslaughter charges against a teenager in the shooting death of his 14-year-old friend.
Instead, a judge in Ocala ruled Wednesday that 17-year-old Dalton Edwards will be charged with possession of a firearm.
Edwards was arrested on Oct. 29 after Daniel Harshman was shot while the boys were "playing around" with a gun in Edwards' bedroom, authorities said.
Authorities said Edwards insisted the shooting was an accident.
Circuit Judge David Eddy set a Dec. 9 hearing on the gun charge.
Harshman was shot in the chest and died a short time later at the hospital.
The Edwards' mother said the boys were friends who often played basketball together.
