Tiny home community may be coming to Oviedo

OVIEDO, Fla. — The city of Oviedo could be the first in the state to have a permanent tiny home community.

The homes are no bigger than a studio apartment.

The tiny homes are being built in a manufacturing facility in Longwood, and from there will be moved to their permanent location in Oviedo.

Inside, it's 360 square feet of living space.

One of the homes will be donated to a veteran and his service dog.

Kim Hiltbrand and her husband have been building tiny homes for the last three years.

They ship customized tiny home recreation vehicles to people around the country.

"Many people don't need as much as they think they need,” said Hiltbrand.

She believes there is a need for tiny homes in Oviedo and plans to build 10 of the homes near Avenue B and 1st Street.

“As far as I’m concerned, I think it’s a good idea,” said Oviedo resident Willie Mason.

The homes and the property they’re built on cost $119,000.

The developer said the price point is one that’s badly needed.

“Within the state of Florida, we are short homes under $150,000. There are families that can qualify for that,” said Hiltbrand.

The Hiltbrands said they hope to move the first home to Oviedo in a month, but city officials said there is still a long process to go through and that the developer has only filed a pre-application with the city so far.
