ORLANDO, Fla. — Two teens accused of making a Snapchat video of themselves holding a gun in their high school bathroom went before a judge Wednesday.
Ricardo Arevalo, 15, and Jeuriel Acevedo, 17, posted a video of themselves on Snapchat while waving a gun around in a bathroom at Cypress Creek High School, deputies said. Officials said the teens also posted a separate image of a magazine for the gun with bullets.
The teens each briefly appeared in court so the defense and state could set a trial date, but both were placed back in detention as recommended by the state.
A trial date was set for April 14, with a pretrial date of April 13.
"The family is very concerned that he is being held in detention, but they are holding up very well and they have gone to see him a few times," Amanda Sampaio, Arevalo’s attorney, said.
Sampaio said Arevalo's parents are confident this is the process that has to happen and that certain rules are in place.
Officials were first made aware of the video by a parent who saw it on social media. Investigators said they want to send a clear message that guns in schools will not be tolerated.
"Whenever there is a firearm involved, and especially since it is on school property allegedly, they are going to ask that he remain in secured detention," Sampaio said.
If convicted, the teens could remain in detention until they’re each 19 years old.
