ORLANDO, Fla. — Tropical Storm Fay came close to becoming the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, but increasing wind shear is expected to keep the storm from reaching that milestone.
Fay is currently being affected by stronger winds aloft, which are disrupting the storm’s organization.
As a result, Fay is expected to gradually weaken through the day and continue losing strength through the remainder of the week.
The storm is also expected to turn back toward the southwest as it remains over the open Atlantic.
At this point, Fay is forecast to remain well away from land. Meteorologists expect the system to spend its lifetime over the Atlantic, with no significant impacts anticipated for the United States or other land areas.
While Fay briefly threatened to become the season’s first hurricane, its interaction with wind shear is now becoming the dominant factor in its forecast.
Forecasters will continue to monitor Fay as it weakens and moves southwest over the open Atlantic.
