ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — University of Central Florida fans that did make the 2,100-mile trip to Arizona for the Fiesta Bowl game will fill up less than half the seats the university had hoped to sell.
University officials had to give up 10,000 of 17,000 tickets because of the poor sales.
That means many fans will cheer on the Knights right from home, and many restaurants and bars by the campus are expected to be packed Wednesday.
Channel 9’s Karla Ray went to Culpper’s restaurant, by UCF, as fans started to pour in for the game.
Every table that could be reserved was taken by Wednesday afternoon.
“It’s an exciting day for us, and it’s and it’s an exciting day for UCF,” said Tony Comas, the managing partner for Culpper’s.
Fans at an alumni party down the street said they’re excited to kick off the New Year’s Day party UCF Nation has been anticipating for weeks.
“It is without a doubt the biggest game in UCF football history,” said alumnus Kenneth Nuckols.
Some fans said had the game been just a little closer to home, they would not have hesitated to make the trip.
“I don't think I'm alone in saying that if the game were in Miami or in New Orleans, I would definitely be there,” Nuckols said.
