ORLANDO, Fla. — Some University of Central Florida students who live on campus will get part of their money back after being told they can no longer live in their dorms due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The university plans to refund more than $5 million in housing costs.

Classes have moved online and students were told not to return after spring break because of concerns about the coronavirus.

“I’m going to move off campus and live with a couple of friends because we can’t stay on campus and just hope for the best,” said student Briana Miller.

The refunds will cover the last month of the spring semester, but the exact amount each student gets will depend on how much they pay.

Students may want to save the money for next year, as the board of trustees is now considering raising rental rates for the first time since 2012.

Students on average would pay $36 more a month in six housing communities.

The increase is expected to generate more than a million dollars and would help pay for housing improvements, as well as operating expenses.

But for now, most students are waiting to learn when they can officially move out of their dorms, which will depend on the spread of the virus.
