ST. LUCIE COUNTY, Fla. — There is more controversy surrounding some license plate readers in Florida.
Officials in Saint Lucie County have discovered at least 14 license plate reader cameras installed without a permit.
The discovery comes after the Florida Department of Transportation ordered all Flock cameras removed from state-managed roads last month.
State officials set a firm deadline for law enforcement agencies to comply with the directive.
Local officials do not know who owns the 14 cameras found in Saint Lucie County. However, county personnel know how to disable the devices and commissioners plan to monitor the cameras to see if anyone comes forward to claim them.
Across Central Florida, several cities and counties have taken further action by deactivating all of their license plate reader cameras.
Law enforcement agencies have until Sept. 30 to remove Flock cameras from state-managed roads.
If agencies do not meet the deadline, state officials will have the cameras removed.
