Undeveloped land in Daytona Beach could be future site of outlet mall

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Channel 9 has learned that undeveloped land near I-95 in Daytona Beach could eventually be the site of a new outlet mall.

Daytona Beach officials will consider a request to change the classification of the land near I-95 and LPGA Boulevard at a meeting Thursday.

City documents include land use maps and renderings of the proposed outlet mall. The project is currently being labeled as the Tomoka Town Center on city documents.

DeLand resident Brenda Griffiths said she enjoys outlet malls, but right now has to make a lengthy drive to get to them.

"I like the outlets down in St. Augustine," Griffiths said. "We go to some of the outlets down in Orlando off of I-Drive."

The city won't release many details about the plans, but said it's reviewing several retail projects in that area.

"I definitely think we need it. I'd love to see it come," resident Thelma Winans said.

Eyewitness News found out that the developer of the project could be Tanger Outlets. The company wouldn't confirm that it's involved in the proposal, but said it is always looking to explore new options.
